A patio is where muddy shoes, cookouts, kids, pets, and long West Texas evenings all meet. Coating it can make the space feel finished, but the plan should begin with how water, shade, and daily traffic move through the area.
Take note of sun and shade
An exposed patio and a covered porch can behave very differently across the year. Notice where the afternoon sun lands, which areas stay damp after rain, and whether furniture or planters create shaded pockets.
Address drainage before the decorative layer
A coating is not a substitute for correcting a major drainage issue. If water consistently heads toward the house or pools in one area, discuss that before installation. The goal is a surface that supports outdoor living without disguising a problem underneath.
Plan for real outdoor use
Think through grilling, pet traffic, outdoor rugs, furniture legs, and the path from the yard into the house. A textured chip system gives the surface visual depth and can make routine sweeping and rinsing feel far less like a chore.
